DIY JOINT COMPOUND ART

Have you seen the textured art trend floating around?

I've seen many variations from places like ZGallerie & Pottery Barn with prices that range anywhere from $130 - $550. Yea, you read that right!! Ouch. I don't know about you but I sure don't have that kind of cash to drop on a piece of textured art. No Sir, no thank you.

But what if I told you that you could make it yourself for less than $30? Yes Sir, yes please!

I had a 'wreath holder' from Hobby Lobby that I had no use for. It was way to big at 30x30 and it was literally a blank white board. I was tired of looking at it so I listed it on FB Marketplace. When I realized the potential that it had, I RUSHED to delete my for sale listing. Guys, I had no idea what I had my hands on.

But don't worry if you don't have a big blank sign staring you down at your house, you can do this with an old canvas or literally framed cardboard!! You can do any size, any color, any texture! The possibilities are endless.

What you'll need:

  • A canvas, art, frame, cardboard, whatever you can get your hands on! Hobby Lobby is a great place to check and you can use a 40% off coupon!

  • Joint Compound

  • Puddy Knife

  • OPTIONAL: Paint Sample or any old paint you have laying around!

All you have to do is slap that joint compound onto the board. Just get it on there, lots of it, really gunk it up.. move it around.. create texture.. cover the board. Keep going until you have a texture you like. You can run a comb or fork through it for an even more unique design!

Once you have it looking like you want it.. you wait for it to dry. This could take 24 hours so leave it overnight and let it do its thing!

You can TOTALLY stop here. I know you can't even believe that it was that easy. The joint compound dries white, the texture is awesome and leaving it white is a beautiful minimalistic option!

Personally, I wanted to add some color. So I grabbed a sample jar of my favorite blue paint - Calligraphy by Behr. The cost of a sample is literally $3 - $5 and you won't even use all of it. So you can save the rest for a rainy day. If you have paint in a color you like than that is even better!

I started dark and continued to add white to lighten the color as I was going for watercolor ombre effect (and I think I nailed it!)

What do you think?! Can you believe this was a DIY and that it cost me less than $10.00. I signed it and I am confident that it will be worth BIG BUCKS one day!

If you decide to give this a try, be sure to use the hashtag #sweethomestrouse so that I can see your creations!

XOXO,

Ali
